41 – Dayron’s Trail

Dayron’s Trail is a beautiful hike in the Šumava region which takes you past the cottage where a Czech playwright and actor, Jan Werich, spent his Summers until his death in 1980, then past the 14th Century church which inspired “Wedding shirts”, a famous narrative ballad by K.J. Erben, published as part of The Bouquet, in 1853. The surrounding countryside and the views from this trail are magnificent!
The villagers claim that the face of the folktale bride is forever imprinted on the gable end of the church. And indeed it is…

Dedicated to brother Dayron who led the way and to Martina who shared her knowledge and photography of the graveyard and introduced me to Erben’s work.
